1. Make a direct-dial call instead of collect
Collect calls only work from landlines, so the solution is to direct-dial the international number:
519-742-3556 (OTIP Travel Assistance / CanAssistance)
This can be done from:
- A cell phone
- A hotel phone
- A cruise ship cabin phone
- An internet/Wi-Fi calling app (if Wi-Fi calling is enabled)
Note: Direct-dial calls are always accepted by CanAssistance, even if they are not collect.
2. Enable Wi-Fi Calling (Very helpful on cruise ships)
If available:
- Connect to Wi-Fi (ship, hotel, café, airport).
- Turn on Wi-Fi Calling in phone settings.
- Dial 519-742-3556 normally.
This bypasses cell networks entirely.
3. Use the Cruise Ship’s Phone System
Cruise ships often do not support collect calls, but they do allow direct international calls.
- Use the phone in your cabin or at Guest Services.
- Dial 519-742-3556 directly.
- Keep the receipt — OTIP may review communication expenses if medically necessary.
4. Try switching networks on your cell phone
If your phone won’t connect:
- Turn on international roaming.
- Manually choose another network under Mobile Networks.
- Try calling again directly.
5. If absolutely no call can be made at the time
If due to:
- No signal
- Cruise ship restrictions
- No access to phones
- Lost/damaged phone
…you are still able to get medical care.
Then:
Have someone back home call OTIP Travel Assistance within 48 hours
They can open a case on your behalf using your:
- Name
- Date of birth
- Policy information (RTIP)
- Location
- Nature of emergency
This ensures the claim is registered, instructions are given, and payment arrangements can start.
